Paying Your Way

There were red faces at one of Britain's biggest banks recently. They had accepted a telephone order to buy £ 100,000 worth of shares from a fifteen-year-old schoolboy (they thought he was twenty-one. The shares fell in value and the schoolboy was unable to pay up. The bank lost £ 20,000 on the deal which it cannot get back because, for one thing, this young speculator does not have the money and, for another, being under eighteen, he is not legally liable for his debts. If the shares had risen in value by the same amount that they fell, he would have pocketed £ 20,000 profit. Not bad for a fifteen-year-old. It certainly is better than delivering the morning newspaper. In another recent case, a boy of fourteen found, in his grandmother's house, a suitcase full of foreign banknotes. The clean, crisp, banknotes looked very convincing but they were now not used in their country of origin or anywhere else. This young boy headed straight to the nearest bank with his pockets filled with notes. The cashiers did not realise that the country in question had reduced the value of its currency by 90%. They exchanged the notes at their face value at the current exchange rate. In three days, before he was found out, he took £ 200,000 from nine different banks. Amazingly, he had already spent more than half of this on taxi- rides, restaurant meals, concert tickets and presents for his many new girlfriends (at least he was generous!) before the police caught up with him. Because he is also under eighteen the banks have kissed goodbye to a lot of money, and several cashiers have lost their jobs.Should we admire these youngsters for being enterprising and showing initiative or condemn them for their dishonesty? Maybe they had managed for years with tiny amounts of pocket money that they got from tight-listed parents. Maybe they had done Saturday jobs for peanuts. It is hardly surprising, given the expensive things that young people want to buy, such as fashionable running shoes and computer games, if they sometimes think up more imaginative ways of making money than delivering newspapers and baby-sitting. These lads saw the chance to make a lot of money and took it.Another recent story which should give us food for thought is the case of the man who paid his six-year-old daughter £ 300 a week pocket money. He then charged her for the food she ate and for her share of the rent and household bills. After paying for all this, she was left with a few coins for her piggy bank.. "She will soon learn the value of money," he said. "There's no such thing as a free lunch. Everything has to be paid for and the sooner she learns that the better." At the other extreme there are fond parents who provide free bed and board for their grown-up children. While even the most hard-hearted parents might hesitate to throw their children out on the streets, we all know of people in their late twenties who still shamelessly live off their parents. Surely there comes a time when every- one has to leave the parental nest, look after themselves and pay their own way in life. But when is it?

The Basics of Import and Export

Importing and exporting is transferring goods from one country to another while paying attention to the laws and requirements of bringing goods out or into that country. If you want to import in large quantities for commercial purposes, you’ll need to have the consent of the local customs department and the right paperwork. Import and export are the basics of international trade. If you are looking forward to starting your own business in the field of importing and exporting business then here are some tips for starters.

Foreign embassies provide nice programs and a great deal of information about their goods to promote exporting. You can find out exactly what it is you are looking to buy. If you are exporting, you can approach your local department of trade and see what plans they have on offer to promote exports. Besides, you should consult the tax department to find out if there is a particular process to setting up an importing and exporting company and what documentation you will require. It is also necessary that you find out about any licensing requirements for importing and exporting of goods. Some countries do not allow their goods to go to a certain country and vice versa, this is known as an embargo. In this way, you can make sure that there are no embargoes with the country you are looking to trade with.

1. International trade refers to both import and export.

2. Only after the local customs department agrees, could you start your own business in the field of import and export.

3. Foreign embassies do nothing to help promote exporting.

4. If you are exporting, you can turn to no one for help.

5. Some countries do not allow their goods to go to a certain country.

Alternative Legal Billing - Win Strategies

Hourly billing is the best way to be charged for legal services. About 95 percent oflawyers still perform. their legal work on an hourly basis. If you want something better thanthe old "bill by the hour"deal, try presenting one of these billing structures.

Project billing for routine issues

lf your legal needs include large but repetitive tasks, consider a flat-fee approach. Once you get a project billing estimate, don't hesitate to shop around to compare prices andservices with other law firms. A firm may provide a better deal if it expects future work from your company.

Results-oriented options

"Pay-according-to-success" is one choice. It considers fees based on the outcome ofthe case and the performance of your counsel. Contingency fees turn the matter into ashared risk or shared encouragement, making the law firm your business partner, not justrepresentation.

Multi-layered tasks

lf you're shopping for a firm for actual legal work involving a number of legal

specialties, consider using blended hourly fees. The firm calculates in advance an "average"rate based on the anticipated time each lawyer spends on the matter.

This arrangement helps the client to avoid paying a senior partner's hourly rate forresearch that should be conducted by a junior associate.

Legal "Insurance”

The contract fee allows the client to pick up the phone and talk to the lawyer withoutneeding to eye the clock This approach works like a legal insurance policy. It encouragescompanies to contact their counsel on non-litigation, non-crisis matters, and to save moneyin the long run by engaging in more preventive legal action.

The Right Way to Motivate Employees

It’s important for a CEO to be passionate and enthusiastic, but there’s a line of professionalism that must always be maintained.

According to a report from the technology website Venture Beat, PayPal CEO David Marcus wrote a critical letter to his employees blaming them for not using PayPal products and encouraging them to leave if they didn’t have the passion to use the products they work for.

According to the website, part of the leaked letter reads:

“It’s been brought to my attention that when testing paying with mobile at Cafe 17 last week, some of you refused to install the PayPal app, and others didn’t even remember their PayPal passwords. That’s unacceptable to me, and the rest of my team, everyone at PayPal should use our products where available. That’s the only way we can make them better, and better.”

“In closing, if you are one of the folks who refused to install the PayPal app or if you can’t remember your PayPal password, do yourself a favor, go and find something that will connect with your heart and mind elsewhere.”

While not obvious at first, the letter reveals a problem of morale and culture at PayPal.As an executive, you certainly want your employees to use and promote your products. However, when faced with a situation where staff isn’t embracing what they make, you need to investigate the root of the problem -- not threaten.

When faced with internal problems, good executives start by asking “why”.They reach out to their executive team first and then to the entire staff to find the root of a problem and how to fix it.Sending out a one-sided note about the problem is not leading, it’s retreating.

Leadership starts by listening.Good executives need to get out among the staff and ask questions and listen without judgment or reaction. The fact that company employees are not embracing and using its products is a failure of leadership that Marcus needs to address by self-reflection.At the end of the day, if his employees have to be forced to use the app, how can he expect consumers to want to willingly pay to use it? Marcus should have focused on three questions:

• Why are you not using the app?

• What is it that we can do to ensure you use our app?

• What do you need from me?

1.A CEO only needs to be passionate and enthusiastic.()

2.It is not professional that PayPal CEO blames his employees not to use PayPal or forget PayPal passwords.()

3.“A one-sided note” refers to the root of PayPal’s problem.()

4.When faced with internal problems, good executives find the root of a problem in their executive team first.()

5.Good executives need to give feedback immediately when they are listening to the staff.()

题干:Most episodes of absent-mindedness--forgetting where you left something or wondering
why you just entered a room--are caused by a simple lack of attention, says Schacter. "You&39;re sup-posed to remember something, but you haven&39;t encoded it deeply." Encoding, Schacter explains, is a special way of paying attention to an event that has a major impact on recalling it later. Failure to encode properly can create annoying situations. If you put your mobile phone in a pocket, for example, and don&39;t pay attention to what you did because you&39;re involved in a conversation, you&39;ll probably forget that the phone is in the jacket now hanging in your wardrobe (衣柜). "Your memory itself isn&39;t failing you," says Schacter. "Rather, you didn&39;t give your memory system the information.it needed." Lack of interest can also lead to absent-mindedness. "A man who can recite sports statistics from 30 years ago," says Zehnski, "may not remember to drop a letter in the mailbox." Women have slightly better memories than men, possibly because they pay more attention to their environ-ment, and memory relies on just that. Visual cues can help prevent absent-mindedness, says Schacter. "But be sure the cue is clear and available," he cautions. If you want to remember to take a medication (药物) with lunch, put the pill bottle on the kitchen table--don&39;t leave it in the medicine chest and write yourself a note that you keep in a pocket. Another common episode of absent-mindedness: walking into a room and wondering why you&39;re there, Most likely, you were thinking about something else. "Everyone does this from time to time,"says Zelinski. The best thing to do is to return to where you were before entering the room, and you&39;ll likely remember.

问题:Why does the author think that encoding properly is very important?

A.It helps us understand our memory system better.

B. It enables us to recall something form our memory.

C. It expands our memory capacity considerably.

D.It slows down the process of losing our memory.
