SECTION B PASSAGES

Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

听力原文: Picture the most beautiful face you have ever seen. Then ask yourself what it is about that face that makes it so lovely. That question may be difficult to answer. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But is it possible to explain the beauty of a human face using math?

According to many scholars throughout history, the answer could be yes. Most very attractive faces have proportions consistent with what is known as the "golden ratio." This ratio can best be understood by thinking of it as a rectangle. In a golden rectangle, the long side is 1.618 times longer than the short side. Therefore, the value of the golden ratio is equal to 1.618. The proportions of the golden rectangle are thought to reflect perfect symmetry. If we frame. a gorgeous face inside of a golden rectangle, the dimensions of each will correspond perfectly. The face is beautiful because it is symmetrical.

Amazingly, the golden ratio is found in many manifestations of beauty—not just in beautiful faces. The dimensions of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt conform. to the golden ratio. And the famous Greek Parthenon contains many golden rectangles. Moreover, the famous fifteenth-century Italian artist, Leonardo da Vinci, deliberately used the golden ratio in his paintings. Not surprisingly, the face of da Vinci's Mona Lisa matches the golden rectangle.

What's the characteristic of most attractive faces?

A.There is no answer.

B.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

C.Most of attractive faces look like Mona Lisa.

D.Most attractive faces have golden ratio.

Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of com
munication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form. of oral speech. Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or unintentionally.. A wink can be a way of flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies approval, while shaking the head indicates a negative reaction.

Other forms of nonlinguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with the fingertips), signal flags, ,Morse code, and smoke signals. There must be few questions on which responsible opinion is so utterly divided as on that
of how much sleep we ought to have. There are some who think we can leave the body to regulate these matters for itself. "The answer is easy," says Dr. A. Burton. "With the tight amount of sleep you should wake up fresh and alert five minutes before the alarm tings." If he is right many people must be under sleeping, including myself. But we must remember that some people have a greater inertia than others. This is not meant rudely. They switch on Slowly, and they are reluctant to switch off. They are alert at bedtime and sleepy when it is time to get up, and this may have nothing to do with how fatigued their bodies are, or how much sleep they must take to lose their fatigue.

Other people feel sure that the present trend is towards too little sleep. To quote one medical opinion, "Thousands of people drift through life suffering from the effects of too little sleep; the reason is not that they can't sleep. Like advancing colonists, we do seem to be grasping ever more of the land of sleep for our waking needs, pushing the boundary back and reaching, apparently, for a point in our evolution where we will sleep no more. This in itself, of course, need not be a bad thing. What could be disastrous, however, is that we should press too quickly towards this goal, sacrificing sleep only to gain more time in which to jeopardize our civilization by actions and decisions made weak by fatigue.

Then, to complete the picture, there are those who believe that most people are persuaded to sleep too much. Dr. H. Roberts, writing in Every Man in Health, asserts it may safely be stated also. It would be a pity to retard our development by holding back those people who are gifted enough to work and play well with less than the average amount of sleep, if indeed it does them no harm. If one of the trends of evolution is that more of the life span is to be spent in gainful waking activity, then surely these people are in the van of this advance.

The author seems to indicate that ______.

A.there are many controversial issues like the right amount of sleep

B.among many issues the right amount of sleep is the least controversial

C.people are now moving towards solving many controversial issues

D.the right amount of sleep is a topic of much controversy among doctors

I hear many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were
so. At young age you ought to be growing away from you parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are a1l taking the same way of snowing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out on their own, most of them are clutching at one another’s hands for reassurance.

They say they want to dress as they please, but all of them wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music, but all of them end up huddled round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in this and that way is that the crowd is doing it.

It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and go his or her own way. These days every teenager can 1earn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children.

All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path. But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records.

You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well,go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come-will the people who respect you for who you are. That’s the only kind of popularity that really counts.

The author’s purpose in writing this passage is to tell _____.

A.readers how to be popular with people around

B.teenagers how to learn to decide things for themselves

C.parents how to control and guide their children

D.people how to understand and respect each other

According to the author, many teenagers think they are brave enough to act on their own, but, in fact, most of them _____.A.have much difficulty understanding each other

B.lack confidence

C.dare not cope with problems single-handed

D.are very much afraid of getting lost

Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage ?A.There is no popularity that really counts.

B.What many parents are doing is in fact hindering their children from finding their own paths.

C.It is not necessarily bad for a teenager to disagree with his or her classmates.

D.Most teenagers claim that they want to do what they like to, but they are actually doing the same.

The author thinks of advertisements as _____.A.convincing

B.influential

C.instructive

D.authoritative

Each semester, Andrew Tom receives a term bill outlining his expenses: tuition, dorm fee,
student center fee, recreation fee, resident activity fee, health insurance. If only the rest of his expenses were as easy to quantify.

"It's like you start out the semester with plenty of money and then $20 for dinner out here and $100 at the department store there, it's gone," said Tom, a Northeastern University third-year student. "And there are so .many things you need like toothpaste or laundry detergent (洗涤剂) that you don't think about until you get here and need it."

From the books lining their shelves to the fashionable clothes filling their closets, college students say the expenses of a college education go well beyond tuition and a dining hall meal plan. Many say they arrive on campus only to be overwhelmed by unexpected costs from sports fees to the actual price of a slice of pizza.

Balancing a job with schoolwork, especially at colleges known for their heavy workloads like Harvard and MIT, can be tough. So can the pressure students often feel to financially keep pace with their friends.

"When you get dragged along shopping, you're going to spend money; if you get dragged to a party and everyone wants to take a cab but you're cheap and want to take a bus. Chances are you'll end up sharing the fee for the cab," said Tom. "I guess you could say no, but no one wants to be the only one eating in the snack bar while your friends are our to dinner."

Max Cohen, a biology major at MIT, said he is accustomed to watching fellow students spend $40 a night to have dinner delivered or $50 during a night out at a bar. During the school's recent spring break, friends on trips for the week posted away messages that read like a world map—Paris, Rome, Tokyo. "Meanwhile I stay home and work," said Cohen. "I didn't realize when I came here how much money I would spend or how hard I would have to work to get by."

It is a lesson some younger students learn quickly. Others, surrounded by credit card offers, go into debt, or worse, are forced to leave school.

"A lot of people don't think twice about how much they spend," said a first-year student at MIT, "and you feel the pressure sometimes to go along with them."

The sentence "If only the rest of his expenses were as easy to quantify." (Lines 2-3, Paragraph 1) implies that ______.

A.there are many other unexpected expenses

B.it is easy to calculate how much more to spend

C.the tuition is too high to be calculated

D.he has to pay only a few other expenses
