You know that some birds and bugs can fly. But did you know that there’s another anima
l that can do this? It has wings like a bird. But it doesn’t look like a bird. It’s a bat.Bats have fur mostly all over, but not on their wings. Some bats have black, brown, red, or yellow fur. These live in dark places, like caves. Other bats live in trees. Many of these bats are part white and part another color. Some of them are green. There are more than 900 kinds of bats. The wings of the smallest bats are only 1/2 foot across. In the day, bats hang by their feet and sleep a lot. At times they clean their fur. Some of the time they care for their babies. Mostly they sleep. But when the sun goes down, they begin to move. At night bats fly around. They try to find food. Bats eat fruit, bugs, plants, fish, and flowers. Some bats use their good hearing to find things in the dark. First they make sounds. The sounds jump off anything around the bats. But【C2】______the average amount of sleep we are getting has fallen, rates of obesity and diabetes have soared. Could the two be connected? We wanted to see what the【C3】______would be of increasing average sleep by just one hour. So we asked seven volunteers, who【C4】______sleep anywhere between six and nine hours, to be【C5】______at the University of Surreys Sleep Research Centre. The volunteers were randomly【C6】______to two groups. One group was asked to sleep for six-and-a-half hours a night, the other got seven-and-a-half hours. After a week the researchers took blood tests and the volunteers were asked to switch sleep【C7】______. The group that had been sleeping six-and-a-half hours got an【C8】______hour, the other group slept an hour less. Computer tests designed to measure brain wave activity【C9】______that most of them struggled with mental agility tasks when they had less sleep, but the most interesting results came from the blood tests that were【C10】______. Dr Simon Archer and his team at Surrey University were【C11】______interested in looking at the genes that were switched on or off in our volunteers【C12】______changes in the amount that we had made them sleep. "We found that【C13】______there were around 500 genes that were affected," Archer【C14】______. "Some which were going up, and some which were going down." What they discovered is that when the volunteers【C15】______back from seven-and-a-half to six-and-a-half hours sleep a night, genes that are【C16】______with processes like immune response and response to stress became more【C17】______The team also saw increase in the activity of genes related to diabetes and risk of cancer. The【C18】______happened when the volunteers added an hour of sleep. So the clear【C19】______from this experiment was that if you are getting less than seven hours sleep a night and can alter your sleep habits, even one hour more, it could make you【C20】______.

回答题Text 2

Every year for more than a decade I"ve gone with some good male friends to the music festi- val. Women are not invited, but they do prepare a picnic for our trip. The better the food, the more likely we are to continue our annual tradition and give them peace at least one week out of the year.

When we"re not eating, we sit around in circles and talk about manly stuff: women, mostly. After years of this special journey I have figured out women are different from us, especially when it comes to how we communicate. Women don"t need to manufacture reasons to chat, but guys need excuses like outings or organized events.

And I"ve noticed that when women are in groups there can be several conversations going on at once. When men are in a group, one man talks, and everybody else listens. It"s like bluegrass jamming in a way; one musician plays the lead, and the rest try to follow.

I"ve had more heartfelt conversations with other men at the festival than I"ve had at any other time in my life, partly because there are no women there, and partly because we"re all a little drunk. It was males bonding over whatever parts we still had left. The festival is also the only place I"ve ever cried in front of other men.

As the years have slipped by, some in our group have lost parents and grandparents, some have divorced, and others have changed careers, not always on purpose. It seems that every year something distressing has happened to at least one member of our crew, and the rest of us are there to listen and offer support.

I hope that this column can offer some comfort to women: if your man heads out on a bowling or poker night with the guys, be happy. Chances are good he"s not fleeing you and the kids, but he"s running toward the conversations he can only have with other men, and he"ll come home the better for it.

It is implied in the first paragraph that 查看材料

A.the trip is a relief for both men and women________

B.the trip will continue in spite of everything

C.the quality of the picnic needs improvement

D.the women can rarely get peace themselves
